Our school is a secondary school with all usual subjects. We have also a special section named SEGPA (Section of general and professional education). This is for students who have difficulties with regular courses. A long time ago our school was a cloister. We have about 650 pupils and about 40 teachers.

In our school we also have a special language section named bilingual section, which gives the children at the age between 10 until 14 the opportunity to have lessons in English and German – it means 3 hours courses in English and 3 hours courses in German per week. We also have European classes in German and English, working like an extension of our general lessons, but in a different way of teaching: for example theater or cinema.

Because of this organisation all language teachers are working on several projects, but we plan to extend the sections to an international departement and to get involved in the Comenius project will surely be an opportunity to open the international door for our school.

Another reason of our interest in the project is the connection between book, library and European feeling.

The name of our school "Pierre Loti" is a good example for the subject, because Pierre Loti was a naval officer and writer of the 19th century; born in Rochefort he brought back numerous souvenirs from his many trips around Europe and the world. All his books are displayed in his house, which is certainly the most unsual and orignal building in Rochefort near our school.

Since 15 years we have a well known library; it is a very special one, in fact of being located in the rope factory - commissioned by Louis XIV and built in 1666. The rope factory made ropes for the French Navy's tall ship. And to have our city-library in this building makes it so special and probably unique in France.

Our school is a catholic institution with over 250 students. We have some pupils with special needs and some migrants from South America, Europe and Asia. Our students are learning maths, history, science, technology, literature and languages and they can practice different kinds of sport.

We have a small and comfortable school library as a working place where students can find a lot of books: about Literature, History, Geography, Science and Reference books. We also have a European section and an English corner. We want the school library to be a friendly place to stay and to enjoy. The staff wants our students to improve their reading skills (we are working to promote reading).

As we want to approach our students to books, we propose them to take the books they are interested in from the library. Then, we have a look at these books in class every two weeks. Some students decide to take the books and surprisingly others start reading and having interest in books. We think it would be interesting if they exchange their points of view and tasks with partners abroad.
